Just crushed two famous Colorado drives in one day.
So I’m still out in Boulder working for CP+B for a while longer, and today I took a little driving tour into the Rocky Mountains to relax on my day off. My goal was meeting my wife’s dad for breakfast in Grand Lake, halfway between here and Steamboat Springs, where he lives. I started from Boulder at sunrise, and drove up Highway 36 to Estes Park, home of the Stanley Hotel. That’s the creepy hotel that Stephen King wrote The Shining about (He wrote it while living in Boulder, and the hotel in the movie is in Glacier National Park in Montana). I carried on from there up and over Trail Ridge Road, one of Colorado’s most famous drives. A twisty and beautiful two-lane road that is so intense that it’s totally closed for winter. I maxed out at about 11,800 feet of elevation, and saw only a few other cars that early in the morning. The scenery was incredible, and I snapped a few pics of Elk roaming the beautifully sparse Alpine Tundra. After Trail Ridge I stopped in Grand Lake to meet my father-in-law for breakfast, had a Bloody Mary and hit the road again. This time I took the famous Peak to Peak Highway from Estes Park through Nederland and into Boulder. I saw plenty of shirtless/helmetless dudes on motorcycles enjoying the warm summer day. So now I am back in my totally awesome “long term mini studio” relaxing. I had a blast, and most of you know I love driving. It was fun, but unfortunately I didn’t have my favorite driving buddy Katelin with me and had to do it in a rental Hyundai Santa Fe. Other than that, I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
